Promoting Civic Discourse in Public Libraries

Thriving, multiracial democracies rely on vibrant public spaces—places where people can gather, connect, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Public libraries—present in nearly every community across North America—are uniquely positioned to advance these efforts. That’s why, in 2025, ULC partnered with Everyday Democracy to train 50 library leaders in multi-partial facilitation—a dialogue approach that promotes balance, equity, and inclusion by encouraging multiple viewpoints, addressing power imbalances, and challenging dominant narratives.
In this 1.5 hour webinar, hear from the 12 participating libraries from the U.S. and Canada who received facilitation training and funding to support hosting a conversation in their own community. Each library will share about the conversation they facilitated and the impacts they saw and heard from participants and beyond. Our partners at Everyday Democracy will also share broad themes from across the cohort and ideas for implementing your own conversation programs in your library.
